Alrighty, I've got the bug that Steve found fixed. He is the winner of the first prize.
Go ahead and try to break it again! More prizes to come if you find a bug that I am unaware of!

It's been exactly a month since I've last posted about my hobby!
I've been working on it and most of the stuff I've been doing has been back-end stuff you don't really get to see. However, I do have the new wall working! It's not finished yet (you'll notice the times are in UTC and it doesn't say who posted but it is being saved) but it works!
Go ahead and give it a try. Let me know if you break it because I'd like to know. I have a prize for the first person to break my script and post it on the wall!

Well today has been very successful.
I converted my template page from pure html to use PHP. This will allow me to create pages from scratch very quickly. There are only 2 lines of code (can i get an "ooooo") required to create a new page with a header (including menu) and footer. 3 lines if you want to have a title on the page.
I got my database design put into a real mysql database, a total of 39 tables (how about an "AHHHH") and counting, so it's ready to be used. I'm in the process of scripting the wall at the moment. Once I get the new posts working, I'll get the view working, and then we'll see if I can write a script to import the existing wall into the new DB so I have some data to play with.
On top of all that, I also mowed the grass!

I was sitting here watching infomercials so my mind started wandering...
I was thinking if we wanted to institute a program to help increase attendance of winter camp, we could start the BARF (Bring A Real Friend) or the BARFING (Bring A Real Friend Increasing Numbers of Gathering) program.
Basically if you invite someone who has never attended a winter camp, they list you as the one who referred them to winter camp on their registration form, and both of you attend a minimum of one night at that year's winter camp, you get something. Like a patch (or is that "illegal" now?) or... a gold star.
We would keep running statistics on who has brought the most new winter campers. If it starts to take off we could even have a trophy for the person who has the most referrals, like a stanley cup sort of thing. Or it could simply be bragging rights... like who has the most nights in camp.

I was thinking about whether to have logins or not since we've gone so many years without. There is a ton of value in it simply from a data perspective, but, like you said, it can reduce the amount of postings we get. I think I'll blend slashdot and how we currently do it. Slashdot will allow you to post anonymously but they broadcast that with the "Anonymous Coward" username. Currently anyone can claim to be anyone.
I think the new site will let them type in their own name / email, like you can right now, but I'll somehow indicate that they are not a registered user so you can easily distinguish between someone who has an account and someone who may be doing a drive-by posting.
I'll defintely have the "are you human" tests anywhere an anonymous user can submit data. I may also have some kind of flood controls where if anybody (registered or not) starts doing posting in a short amount of time (so its obvious a script is in use) then I'll either require a "are you human" test or simply block the user from posting for x amount of time. I've seen that on phpbb forums.
I'm hoping that we can start increasing the amount of traffic on the site with this site redesign.
A few things I wanted to do with the registered users is give the option to receive email alerts when someone posts on any wall, replies to one of their posts (basically someone posts a message after yours), with the objective to keep people coming back to the site.
We could even allow people to sign up for reminders about how their hobby is going, and to post their progress (or lack of) on the Hobby HQ. We could even allow people to "subscribe" to other people's hobbies and get notifications when they post an update. All of this would be default opt-out, so the only way you'll get them is by opting-in. Ultimately, the objective is to keep people coming back.

I like it. The only thing I'd say is that I think it should always be possible to post things without a user account. Maybe non-users have to do a skills test or something to help avoid spam). I don't want their to be any barriers to youth entering comments or posting.
I know that's probably pointless given their overall participation on the site, but I consider it an important design objective.

It doesn't appear the hobby log area is working (or I'm looking in the wrong place) so I'm posing my progress here!
I have a site design on paper and I've got the beginnings of a database design which will definitely require additions as more features are accounted for.
However, I do believe I have the database tables designed and related for the following site features:
- User accounts
- Posting (wall, hobby log, wintercamp planning, etc)
- Wintercamp History pages (roster, planning, leaders, costs)
- Hobby logs and statistics
Next I'm going to get the template for the site layout designed so I can then start coding. I'll post some links when I have something you can actually look at other than an ERD...

I seems to me that the world is full of non-flammable places to store or stack documents. But, I may be missing something. Jeanne and Sam (her dad) do not stack stuff on the stove, but do stack it on seemingly every other surface in the house. On the bright side, Taylor is tall enough to reach counter tops and is enforcing some stacking discipline. That is probably not a good thing, but it does keep the clutter down a bit.

So get this... Some friends of ours came over Friday night and told us about how they came home to a smokey, but ok, house. Apparently while they were gone one of their dogs decided he wanted something on the stove. In the process of getting whatever it was he wanted, he turned on the stove.
As you can imagine (I'm sure Steve could elaborate) the items which were sitting on the stove ignited filling their house with smoke. Everybody, including the dogs and house, are fine but there was some considerable smoke damage they need to scrap off their cape cod style ceiling.
And my wife wonders why I don't like it when she stacks things on the stove...

Yeah, it was a pretty scary thing for a minute. I mean it wasn't gigantic scorching the ceiling flames, but I think if it had gone another minute or two we might have had some serious trouble.

Not sure if he's a hero or a prophet but Jeff's gift of a fire extinguisher several years ago came in very handy tonight. I bumped the stove on my way downstairs and thought I had turned it off in time. By the time I came back up from doing laundry, several items that were on the stove were on fire (yes, we know storing flammables on the stove is a bad plan).
I started trying to disassemble the fire into the sink, but it wasn't working. Kristie answered my call for help with fire extinguisher in hand. I suffered probably a second degree burn on one finger and that's about it. We did clean off the stove...
